Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
